Overview

This unit prepares you for an industry placement in the area of livestock enterprise management. You will build on your existing theoretical knowledge of livestock production systems to analyse the physical and financial performance of a livestock industry and prepare a whole-of-business plan.

Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Recommended Student Time Commitment

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. 1 Practical Assessment

Assessment Title Livestock producer interview
Task Description

You are required to find and interview a livestock producer. Your interview should focus on asking the producer their thoughts on the following:

  • Key physical influences on their production system
  • Key financial influences on their production system
  • Identify the market for their product and how that links back to their on farm practices (note, detail on strategic decisions is required, not just the livestock targets)

Following this interview, you are required to summarise the key points from your interview into a 500 word report and submit this to Moodle. This report should be pitched to a non-expert.

Assessment Title Livestock industry case study
Task Description

You will be provided with some initial details of a livestock enterprise. You are to prepare a case study of the livestock business, including the following information:

  1. Overview of the industry/farm/company
  2. Some primary (collect your own) and/or secondary (published) data or statistics. Examples of data/statistics include: production methods, yield, prices, inputs and costs
  3. Physical and financial performance
  4. Threats and opportunities

You are to assume the location of the property is in your region of study (i.e. Bundaberg students are to assume the business is located in the Burnett region)

The structure of your case study should be as follows:

  • Title Page

  • Table of Contents
  • Introduction to the report and case study background
  • Body of the report
  • Conclusion/recommendations

Assessment Title Livestock business plan for introducing a major innovation
Task Description

Identify a specific issue from your Case Study (Assessment 2) and prepare a business plan which includes the introduction of an innovation to reduce or remove the issue. The purpose of your business plan should be made clear in your report. Typical purposes of agricultural business plans include:

  • Analysis of business performance
  • Proposal of new business ventures
  • Review of current business direction and procedures
  • Detailed study of an issue to aid in decision-making
