Term-Specific Information

This course is designed as a specific program to give relevant, practical advice and help in the teaching of textiles and sewing. It is recognized that whilst you have knowledge and skills in your practical field, you may not have the same confidence in teaching Textiles and Sewing.  Even those of you who have been involved in textiles and fashion since leaving school may well find that the suggested techniques and practical skills involved when teaching children may vary from your own.

Delivery Details: 1 week intensive workshop

When: Monday 25th June – 29th June 2012, 8am – 4pm

Where: Emmaus College Home Economics Department, Yaamba Road Campus, Rockhampton

 

You  are  required  to  put  together  a  sewing  and resources  kit for  the  week  long  residential  in  place  of  the  purchase of   textbooks.

 The  items  listed below will also   be  an essential  resource  base  from which  to  build and  create a  tool  box  for use on  your  practicum’s  in your  school settings.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • 1 storage box – marked clearly with name (large enough to contain all sewing requirements at the end of each day)
  • 1 large reel of thread (approximately 300m)
  • 1 Bernina bobbin
  • 1 marking pencil or tailor’s chalk
  • Pins
  • Quick unpick
  • Tape measure
  • 1 pair of sharp scissors
  • Hand sewing needles
  • Beading hand sewing needle
  • 1 lever arch folder
  • 50 plastic sleeve inserts
  • 1 paper glue stick

BOXER SHORTS:

  • 1.2 m cotton fabric for sample boxer shorts (no satin material)
  • 90cm non-roll elastic
  • If desired – 0.2meters of fabric of contrast for pockets or matching fabric for pockets

BAG:

  • 0.7m denim (outside of bag and handles)
  • 0.7m calico (lining)
  • 0.3m x 2 contrast/bright fabrics
  • 0.4m white cotton fabric
  • 3 x different coloured squares of felt
  • 40cm standard zip
  • 1m x 2 ribbon (plain, 2 contrasting colours)
  • Cigarette lighter
  • 1 small packet of seed beads
  • 1 small packet of sequins
  • 1 reel of thick, top stitching cotton suitable for sewing machine
  • 5 pegs
  • 5 meters of cotton string (for tie dying – no plastic)
  • Approximately 20 rubber bands

INTERFACINGS:

  • 0.3m iron on interfacing

SAMPLER SEWING CONSTRUCTION:

  • 1.5m (in total) of 112/115m wide fabric (for samples only, therefore does not have to be expensive)
  • 2 x 20cm zip (standard and invisible)

CRAFTS:

  • 0.3m Visafix
  • Feathers (small packet)
  • 0.7m chiffon
  • 1 spray bottle
  • 1 face mask (for protection from fumes)
  • 1 photo – this is for decorative purposes only and will not be cut/ruined
  • 3 x different coloured DMC cotton

Task Description

You  will be progressively assessed over  the  week on  practical textile and sewing  skills suitable for  years 8, 9 and  10.

You will be working in a school textile and sewing work room.  There is a series of practical tasks to be undertaken every day.  You will be planning and producing performances in textile technology suitable for Years 8-10.

These practical tasks include; however, are not limited to:

  • Samplers
  • Boxer shorts
  • Denim Bag construction; and
  • Embellishments

All  details  will be  provided  on the course  Moodle  site and  in the  course  booklet  you  will receive on the  first day of the residential workshop .   

Assessment Due Date Progressively assessed over the duration of the week long intensive residential
Return Date to Students Results for Assessment task 1 will be awarded at the completion of the residential
Weighting 50%
Assessment Criteria

1. Describe  factors that affect alternatives for design, materials and techniques

2. Select design, materials and techniques that satisfy some basic factors or some aspects of key factors. 

3. State decisions made and describe some basic factors or some aspects of key factors that influence decisions

4. Plan and organize resources so that task is completed.

5. Produce  finished products classed as satisfactory by clients that may be ready for use

Task Description

Design a topical and interesting textile work unit suitable for students in either Years 9 or 10.  Ensure that your unit of work would appeal to generation Y, and utilises literacy, numeracy and technology skills. (General capabilities as identified in ACARA).

 Further  details for  task 2 are supplied  in your  course  Moodle  site and  in the  course  booklet  you  will receive on the  first day of the residential workshop.

Feedback on the final assessment task will be provided following moderation and prior to the date of certification of grades for the term.

Assessment Criteria

1. Develop a unit plan that will use sufficient subject matter and time 

2. Select and sequence learning activities and teaching strategies in accordance with outcome level of target audience 

3. Develop assessment instruments that allows unit outcomes to be achieved and allows students to be able to meet specific standards for judgment of students’ abilities 

4.  Develop an assessment standard sheet that allows students and teachers to be able to make effective judgments in relation to standard of work submitted 

5. Evaluate the criteria sheet in relation to use by teachers and students as a means of validating judgment of performance

6. Develop a student and class profile with a number of dimensions/assessment tasks included.  

7. Demonstrate a range of practical skills when completing the design brief.  With  use of annotated notes.

8. Assess and give a standard that could be related to outcomes and give feedback that is related  to the standard achieved.
